Inspection system for visual and “forensic analysis”

Nowadays, literally all machines used in pharmaceutical packaging are equipped with some type of vision system for product inspection. These systems are capable of checking products for presence, position, color and geometry parameters.

Today’s modern production is designed for more flexibility, batch sizes are smaller and as a result, many different products are run on one and the same packaging equipment. Besides economical advantages with this flexible operation on one side, there is an increasing potential for a product mix-up on the other: Similarity or even optical sameness of products in color or geometry to name two.

To mitigate any potential risk of a rogue product, there was little one can do using traditional vision based inspection technology.

A more “forensic” approach such as NearInfraRed (NIR) technology, which has been successfully employed in the laboratories of the pharmaceutical companies over years, can be the answer.

The development of VisioNIR AS is the result of the considerations described above. The outstanding feature of VisioNIR AS is its dual function which is also revealed by its name: Visio stands for traditional optical inspection, NIR stands for near-infrared spectral analysis (AS meaning Area Scan).

NIR is particularly interesting for spectral comparisons and, in analogy to criminal investigation it can be referred to as molecular “fingerprinting” or “forensic analysis”. With both technologies built into one system, it can support packaging operations to safely maintain highest inspection standards by evaluating both: product content on a spectral basis in addition to visual (i.e. cosmetic) product features.

VisioNIR AS can be implemented directly into the host packaging machine. The system can run in intermittent or continuous motion. As a result of using diode array technology, the system is robust towards outside influences such as vibration.

Advanced Mass Verification for powders, solids & liquids

VisioAMV is an electro-capacitance system which was originally developed as a high-speed alternative to gravimetric weighing technology in pharmaceutical primary packaging operations. Driver for the development of the system was the demand for a 100% weight check measurement technology of so-called micro-doses of powders used in inhalation therapy.

Traditionally, determining the weight/mass of a product is made by using gravimetric scales. This method works well to certain speeds and in undisturbed conditions. However, with high-speed requirements to check 100% of the process, space constraints and machine environment influences, the traditional mechanical method reaches its limits.

Today and in the future, manufacturing and packaging operations of different industries strive towards 100% product and process control. The goal is to monitor and control those high-speed processes with devices providing both, a high degree of accuracy of the measurement as well as high precision of the device.

The system is essentially a miniaturized high-end electro-capacitance sensor. Due to its small size and flexibility in design, VisioAMV can be used in a versatile range of applications and is applicable for high-speed measurements of powders, solid objects and liquids, or other tasks of product inspection.

This “capacitive” technology “observes” a product's influence in an electrical field. Everything which passes this field produces a signal which correlates to its mass. I.e., a measurement takes places right in a dosing system (in free-fall) or in a different application in linear motion. Since its deployment, the system has been applied to a variety of different applications.

Inspection system for metallic objects

VisioCount is an electro-inductive system which was originally developed as a high-speed alternative to gravimetric weighing technology in pharmaceutical secondary packaging operations.

As a completeness check device, the system has its most popular applications in secondary packaging operations. Blisters with an aluminum lid foil as well as alu-alu (cold-form) blisters can be inspected with the system accordingly. VisioCount checks the number of blister cards stacked in a closed carton against a pre- set value. Both shortfall and surplus of blister counts are detected.

The system “counts” the layers of (typically) blister cards in a closed carton. This specific application gave the system its trade name “VisioCount”.

The system is essentially a miniaturized high-end metal detector for ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Due to its small size and flexibility in design, VisioCount can be used in a versatile range of applications and is applicable for high-speed measurements of powders, solid objects and liquids.

Today, the system has been made available by visiotec GmbH to all industries in search of powerful solutions for the monitoring of continuous processes and production.

In other application areas the system design will be adapted accordingly to fit the required process. E.g. in dosing applications of powders or tablets the system can be designed to check for metal contaminants during product filling.

Material inspection system

For moisture or light sensitive products, high-barrier materials such as aluminum foil is used because even thin material still provides full barrier capabilities for the product inside. However, the mechanical stress on the material during cold forming can cause almost imperceptible cracks and pinholes which then defeat the purpose of a high-barrier package.

VisioScan closes the final gap in quality testing for these tiny and literally invisible material defects. The system scans the complete material surface and detects damages in material down to 10 μm. The system is best known for blister forming as well as blister lidding material inspection applications in the pharmaceutical packaging arena.

Besides 100% surface inspection of above shown aluminum blisters, also the material side-walls are effectively inspected. Pinholes, pores, fissures, foil fractures and cracks will be detected according to the set threshold.

The inspection area can be divided into different zones. Therefore, a targeted reject can be achieved and neighboring areas can continue further in the downstream process. VisioScan can be used in other application areas for any kind of non-transparent materials, such as e.g. tubular objects.

VisioNIR LS - Application on Kraemer UTS-Extended

Nowadays, batches easily reach sizes > 1,000,000 tablets. However, only 30 tablets are used for content uniformity (CU) release testing. This same „assay of samples“ is typically checked for other parameters such as weight, hardness, height and diameter.

An innovative and dedicated product test system such as Kraemer's new UTS-Extended with integrated NIR technology can check for these physical-chemical characteristics. As opposed to the required 30 samples, the UTS-Extended can significantly increase the sampling size. 

The new UTS-Extended is the latest addition to the successful Kraemer UTS Series (Universal Test System). Visiotec's VisioNIR LS system is fully integrated into the UTS hardware and software platform. The system can be run in at-line configuration for automated tablet feeding from a connected tablet press or off-line. 

The VisioNIR LS is a high speed Near Infrared spectrometer for the in-line and at-line use of Content Uniformity (CU) inspection. The system can be run in the described at-line configuration either in reflection or transmission mode. This guarantees best results for all tablet sizes and shapes. The reliable trend monitoring visualizes the CU prediction value of each sampled tablet. Outliers can be safely identified. The resulting spectra are evaluated by the multivariate data analysis software “The Unscrambler”.

VisioNIR LS is the result of continuous development from customer requirements, process understanding and experience in the pharmaceutical production. As a result of the flexible hardware and intuitive operating software, VisioNIR LS is easy to retrofit and meets the pharmaceutical requirements.
