Introducing the new C80HS-A96HS: innovation and creativity in blister packaging

The new C80HS-A96HS is an integrated blister line designed especially for the production of medium batches and frequent size changeovers. Based on the success of the well-known blister lines manufactured by IMA SAFE, the C80HS-A96HS reaches a production speed of up to 700 blisters/minute and 500 cartons/minute.

Innovative and compact design as well as its ergonomics permit maximum accessibility and cleanliness, operations which are in fact extremely easy and quick to perform. Due to its ease of use and being operator-friendly, only one operator is needed for the whole line. The machine concept has been based on the IMA philosophy of flexibility in operation and changeover combined with easy cleaning. Rejected blisters are easily identifiable due to a difference in shape to the correct ones, this therefore avoids any possible mix up during the production process.

High efficiency in production is assured as the blister machine and the cartoner are completely integrated. The blister line is able to handle a wide variety of packaging materials. An integrated blister stacking together with the special transfer system to the cartoner, which is a "positive blister transport", guarantees a very high running efficiency of this new line. One of the advantages of the cartoner, is the design of its complete balcony structure. This blister line has been constructed with sophisticated technological concepts that guarantee the reliability and efficiency of the entire packaging process.

Another advantage of the C80HS-A96HS is its compatibility with the formats of the C80-A81 blister line, the leader in the market, as well as with all the IMA feeding units which are extremely efficient as they can handle any kind of product. IMA LIFE will exhibit a complete aseptic processing line composed by one VEGA 8 rotary vial washing machine, one BLUE GALAXY 870 FLS de-pyrogenating tunnel, one XTREMA F2000 vial filling and stoppering machine, one ALU 400/8C rotary capper, one HYDRA 300 external vial washing machine and an automatic loading/unloading system CLU-LF12. The complete line is equipped with the new range of IMA LIFE isolators.

More in details, the VEGA 8 is a rotary washing machine designed for washing vials, bottles, ampoules and unstable cylinder-shaped containers. Specifically built to allow strict decontamination methods, it is suitable for the removal of both dilutable and non-dilutable particles. Completely built in 316 L stainless steel for the parts in contact with the product, this machine can process a wide range of containers with simple tool-less change-over parts. The washing cycle guarantees 3 log. particle reduction and can be customized according to the requested process. VEGA 8 reaches an output speed of up to 400 pieces/minute.

The BLUE GALAXY is a vial de-pyrogenating tunnel designed to be part of a production line that require continuous laminar flow de-pyrogenation. The wide range of manufactured tunnels gives the possibility of satisfying any production requirements; in the same way the high technological level allows the use of this tunnel for any kind of application and this is why it can be easily integrated in lines designed to handle high toxic compounds and/or in lines with isolators. The system of air balancing, pressurization and heating/cooling allows an effective thermal treatment of glass containers. The cooling zone can be sterilized by dry heat or by VHP (IMA LIFE patented).

The XTREMA F2000 is the latest technological breakthrough in sterile filling. State-of-the-art technological level to offer the most flexible and configurable aseptic filler currently available on the market. The machine features an extremely innovative design, based on a modern modular concept, for actively managing the productive process. Built-in versatility matched with a sophisticated thorough IPC system allows the user to gain control over each step of the production by intervening at any time, tailoring the machine to the current needs. The machine features a 100% IPC at the highest speed available on the market: up to 400 vials/minute. XTREMA F2000 can however reach a production speed of 600 vials/minute. Industry experience, proven filling technology and IMA LIFE expertise make of XTREMA F2000 much more than a machine.

The machines dedicated to the capping of vials for injectable products are a critical part of the production process, since they guarantee the hermetic seal and therefore the integrity of the drug inside the container. The ALU Series of cappers consists of both continuous and intermittent motion rotary machines for the application and sealing of traditional aluminium caps, flip-off caps and even special design caps (ADD-VANTAGE, BIO-SET and MONOVIAL). Designed to guarantee a capping process with low particle generation, these machines are suitable for installation in conventional type contamination-controlled environments and under isolator. Cap sealing is carried out with an idle edging roller and by rotation of the container support plates. AISI 304 or AISI 316 L st. st construction and cGMP compliance. The ALU 400/8C, on show, is a continuous capper with 8 capping heads, reaching an output of up to 400 pieces/minute.

The HYDRA 300 is a rotary vial washer designed to wash the external surface of glass and plastic containers which could have been potentially contaminated by the product during the filling process. Special techniques in the water supply system have been developed for decontaminating filled and capped vials and also to avoid cross contamination between containers and the machine. HYDRA 300 has been conceived to be part of complete processing lines and can reach an output of up to 300 pieces/minute.

The CLU-LF12 is the new generation of IMA LIFE automatic loading/unloading system on show, combined with an integrated dummy shelf stack to simulate a freeze dryer, it consists of a row by row accumulating system that loads and unloads at constant level up to 200 vials/minute.

IMA LIFE will also exhibit the new SENSITIVE AP400 TE 3T, a labelling machine featuring the application of labels on three of the carton's sides. The machine is capable of applying two tamper-evident security seals on the two sides of the carton and one vignette on the top side.

The advantage of this machine, many of which have already been successfully inserted in production lines, is the compact and ergonomic design that allows an easy access and a quick cleaning. Among its features, the positive transport of cartons, the rejection of the non-conforming product and the tool-free size changeover.

The machine on show is equipped with ink jet printer and a control video camera in compliance with the Track & Trace requirements.

The SENSITIVE AP400 TE 3T reaches a production speed of up to 400 cartons/minute and will be exhibited in line with the C260 thermoforming machine and the FLEXA cartoner.

The SPINE is an automatic inspection and sorting system for tablets and capsules produced by SENSUM. The machine has an ergonomic design with a small number of format parts simplifying the changeover, cleaning and maintenance.

The machine inspects the entire surface of tablets and capsules (i.e. size, shape, cracks, colour deviations, etc.): the product are held in reproducible position by vacuum system, illuminatd by special controllable LED illumination units and inspected by six color cameras.

The machine is controlled via a user-friendly graphical interface, providing simple operation and training for the inspection of the new products.

The active sorting system, with sorting verification for both good and defective products, ensures a fail-safe and reliable operation.

The SPINE can reach an inspection speed up to 360,0000 products/hour.

IMA TEA & COFFEE Division will present for the first time the new C2002, the fastest and most flexible double chamber tea bag machine with the highest efficiency rating available today (up to 600 enveloped bags/minute) and capable of processing heat-sealed as well as crimped outer envelopes and naked bags on the same machine, finally counted, stacked and packed into cartons.

Based on the experience and know-how gained in the development of the C24 and C27 models, the C28 takes advantage of the already consolidated knot technology for the production of a high quality ecological double chamber teabag at a reduced speed (180 bags or envelopes/minute).

The new C28 combines IMA's traditional standards of flexibility and versatility with a simpler technological content offering the possibility to pack naked bags, crimped outer envelopes or heatsealed outer envelopes together with suitable final packaging solutions (hand removal or automatic cartoning attachment).

The new C28 is the response to the market demand for low capacity production of high quality non heatsealable double chamber teabags with string and tag.

The ADAPTA's DNA has its roots in IMA's 50 years of experience and more than 5,000 capsule filling installations worldwide. This knowledge and experience have allowed the IMA capsule fillers to evolve and adapt to the ever changing requirements of the market.

The Adapta capsule filling machine, covering medium and high speed requirements, is appreciated for its exceptional design flexibility: two of its dosing units are reversible/interchangeable giving the possibility of a plug and play shift between different machine configurations and filling combinations. The machine is designed to dose 3 products (up to 5 upon request) into the same capsule, reaching a speed of 100,000 capsules/hour.

The Adapta also has an indisputable efficiency as far as in-process control is concerned. With the appropriate options, total production control can be achieved thanks to individual check of product dosage and 100% control of gross and/or net weight. The machine on show will be equipped with the TPC unit for 100% in-process control of gross weight.

The ROTO CUBE LAB 12 is a compact High Shear Mixer Granulator and Single-Pot Processor for R&D purposes. It is used to process small batch sizes (2Kg - 4Kg) carrying out the entire process, from granulation to the drying of granules, in one contained bowl, thus reducing risk of contamination and increasing protection for the operators.

The ROTO CUBE LAB 12 is suitable for the development of potent products and allows total batch reproducibility, ensuring high product yields.

The tilting system of the bowl ensures gentle handling of granules during vacuum drying to prevent them breaking. The gas stripping system (GA.ST.), by injecting an inert gas through the product mass, enhances the evaporation rate.

The machine guarantees a reliable monitoring of granulation and drying, an accurate detection of the process end-point and very easy cleaning operations. ROTO CUBE is also available in a complete range of machines for production purposes, up to 3,000 litres (bowl geometrical capacity).

The PERFIMA perforated pan for tablet coating allows a high flexibility and reliability. The pan shape combined with the mixing baffles ensures a perfect mixing of the cores and a uniform distribution of the coating material.

The machine can work a wide range of batches, from 25% to 100% of the pan capacity: mixing capability is maintained with a minimum or a maximum quantity of product, while position and dimensions of the outlet air duct allow a uniform drying of the product, thus saving energy.

The machine can be fitted with automatic product loading and discharge. On a standard Perfima pan, product discharge is achieved through a discharge tube connected to the pan by a fast fixing system.

All openings are equipped with inflatable seals avoiding contamination of the external environment: complete isolation of all the parts in contact with the product is achieved and a completely automatic Clean In Place is possible.

The spray system has been designed to ensure easy maintenance, simple inspection operations and quick changeover from one product to another. Two spray units are available: the film system (air) and the sugar system (airless). The spray guns are fitted on a sliding support arm and can be positioned and adjusted from the external part of the machine.

Two different systems are available: BT (basic) and TO (advanced version). Both feature the use of a PLC connected to an operator terminal board: a constant operator guide and a continuous control over every significant process parameter are granted.

PERFIMA is available in four models: 200 (on show), 500 and 800 and Perfima Lab for R&D purposes.

The PRESSIMA AX is a rotary tablet press in a compact frame ensuring high flexibility. The machine has been designed for R&D applications, pilot batch manufacturing and production support.

The Pressima features an interchangeable turret and a special turret version of 8 stations with both B and D type tooling.

The production area has an excellent accessibility allowing a quick and easy cleaning. The mechanical area is fully accessible for maintenance and everything can be dismantled without tooling.

The machine is completely automated: pre-compression, compression, ejection and tablet scraper force can be measured, as well as indirect weight-control and upper/lower punch displacement. Individual reject, self-adjustment on machine working parameters and full production report, make of Pressima AX the right press for pilot batch production. Pre-pressure and main-pressure rollers are designed for forces similar to production machines, ensuring a good scaling up.

Pressima AX can reach a speed up to 79,800 tablets/hour.

The new SYNTHESIS 500 2G combines the well known separation of the compression area from the lower machine compartment with new solutions for high efficiency and flexibility, cleaning and isolation technologies. The torque drive system is a standard on all Synthesis 2G machines, as well as the new optimized dust aspiration.

A complete separation between processing and mechanical area is achieved by using special seals and silicon bellows. These bellows isolate the product from punch lubrication, guaranteeing black-spots free tablets. A stainless steel housing isolates the compression area from the lower cam track area, increasing machine running time and allowing rapid cleaning.

The state of the art control system 'ViCon', with its innovative "Trending" and "Human RQ" options, enables easy and quick machine set-up.

The tablet chute and the fill-shoe are fixed to a pivotal bearing and can swing out for excellent accessibility, facilitating maintenance and cleaning operations. The turret can be removed and reassembled very esily for cleaning or size changeover.

The machine on show will be equipped with the new Increased IPC: a load cell integrated in the tableting machine allows weight checking of one tablet each turret revolution, with all stations being checked in sequence. An extremely precise feedback on machine working parameters is given, ensuring high quality production with the most difficult products.

The Synthesis 2G is also suitable for both single and bi-layer tablets and for core tablets. Two models are available: Synthesis 500 2G and Synthesis 700 2G reaching respectively a maximum speed of 360,000 and 1,020,000 tablets/hour.

The new S250 Smart has been developed to enhance the concept of flexibility and automation of the proven S250 tablet press, well known for its robustness and reliability. The new version combines established technology with the latest controls and an interchangeable turret.

The upper machine head can be lifted to ease turret removal and allow access to the inner part of the press. This operation shortens the cleaning time and improves machine flexibility: the turret can be removed simply and quickly and can be swung out and positioned on a trolley.

The machine has a very compact design and the electric components have been included in the machine housing. The entire press is operated via a modern touch screen control. The software has been designed in a simple and self explanatory manner, enabling operators to handle the machine efficiently and safely.

The S250 Smart is available in three versions: Traditional, Classic and Prime. As standard each version includes a number of functions – each one with different options, in order to satisfy market requirements.

The machine reaches a maximum production speed of 300,000 tablets/hour.

The new STYL'One is a very innovative and unique R&D press in IMA-Kilian product range.

The STYL'One allows automatic exploration of the tablet design space with no waste of powder: precompression. Compression force are programmable, dwell time can be extended from 5ms to 2 seconds, compression can be performed at a given force/density.

This press is specifically suitable for easy and fast compaction studies, and can be upgraded to multilayer and tab-in-tab. Setting-up of tamping force and filling height is rapidly achieved: only the equivalent of one tablet is lost before running a small batch of tablets.

Fully automated and computer controlled, the STYL'One can perform automatic study of virtually infinite compression profiles: upper and lower force and displacement, pre- and main compression and ejection force are all measured as standard; take-off and instrumented die are available as optional.

The ANALIS data acquisition and control package includes all standard reporting, allowing a taylor-made reporting creation. Data can easily be exported to other systems for further analysis.

The same standard tooling of manufacturing presses is used and different die feeding systems are available on request (manual, gravity, force feeder) as well as good and bad tablet selection and weight adjustment.

STYL'One can perform clinical batches production with a maximum output of 900 tablets/hour in case of single layer and 300 tablets/hour in case of 3 layers.
