Inspection solutions for limited space issues on the Aspirin® packaging line
28/09/2011
The Bayer Bitterfeld GmbH produces approximately 100.000 Aspirin® packages in an 8 hour shift. This is more than 300 packages per minute. Information about the production time, lot number as well as the expiry date is printed on the back of each package with an inkjet printer. An inspection solution integrated into the packaging process verifies if the print is present and readable.
If this is not the case, the machine stops working automatically until the error at the printer is removed.
Modular inspection systems ideal for retrofitting
The basic requirements for the inspection system was a 100% reliable identification of missing codes or code parts at best value for money. And retrofitting existing packaging machines always means limited space. The modular ZFX vision sensor from Omron fulfills these requirements providing a separate camera and controller.
On top of this, the selection of the vision solution is justified as follows: "The compact shape of the vision sensor is one argument. Secondly, before the blisters are punched out the prints are inspected. As two blisters are processed in parallel lines, also two cameras need to be mounted. Therefore it also saves space that one controller can process the information from two camera heads."
Miniature cameras when space is really tight
Beyond the requirements for a space saving and cost efficient solution with separate camera heads and multiple image processing in one controller, Omron also offers solutions for very challenging applications e.g. miniature cameras when space is really tight.
Of course also the intuitive usage and easy integration into systems for statistic evaluation is valued at the Bayer Bitterfeld GmbH. The complete application report is available on request.
