Documentary "Taste the Waste" shows the global waste of food
Why do we throw away so much? And how can we stop this kind of waste?
These are the main topics of the new documentary by the German filmmaker Valentin Thurn. The film has had its theater premiere at this years Berlinale Festival and will be shown in Cologne on 2 September 2011 for the first time in the cinema.
Why are ever-greater quantities being destroyed? Valentin Thurn is looking for explanations: from supermarket sales staff and managers, from bakers, wholesale market inspectors, welfare recipients, ministers, farmers and EU bureaucrats. It’s a system that we all take part in: Supermarkets constantly need to have the complete selection of merchandise on offer, the bread on the shelves has to be fresh until late in the evening, strawberries are in demand at any time of the year.
Amazing but true: On the way from the farm to the dining-room table, more than half the food lands on the dump. Most of it before it ever reaches consumers.
The film not only accuses food destruction but also shows first initiatives who try to prevent the waste or to make further use of dumped food.
The film will be shown in the regular film program of selected German cinemas as of 8 September 2010 - it will be shown in German television on 20 October 2011 (ARD, 11:30 pm).
