SAVE FOOD

Abundance here – scarcity there. As part of the forthcoming interpack the Special Show SAVE FOOD will show how the individual elements of the value chain in terms of packaging, logistics and transport can contribute to fighting the global waste of food and thereby generate more sustainability. In cooperation with the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation and the conceptual sponsor associations interpack 2011 will shed some light on the extent of, and reasons for, global food loss and will present solutions and concepts on how the protective function of packaging can effectively counteract the premature perishing of foodstuffs.

Food loss occurs along the complete supply chain: from cultivated acreage through to food production and transport or distribution to individual households. Experts estimate that across the EU some 71 million tons of food are thrown away every year and a large proportion of this – for whatever reasons – only after being purchased by consumers. In developing countries it is the other way round: here waste in the supply chain is assumed to be comparatively high while waste by consumers is rather low.

This is where interpack comes in. Because packaging must be communicated as part of the solution for more sustainability in production and consumption – rather than as part of the disposal problem.

Congress brings together International Stakeholders

On 16 and 17 May 2011 Messe Düsseldorf and FAO invite interested parties to the debut of SAVE FOOD. This international congress will focus on the conflict between nutrition, packaging and sustainability. In parallel with interpack the Congress will bring together the key stakeholders from the food and packaging industries, retail, politics, administration, research and civil society in Düsseldorf. For two days speakers from all regions of the earth will address such issues as global food supply, supply security, urbanisation, food development and marketing, logistics, recycling and agricultural economy.

Exhibition at Glass Pavilion

The Congress subjects will also be centrestage at an exhibition on the outdoor premises of the Exhibition Centre. Here the essential information for Congress delegates, trade fair visitors and media representatives will be summarised in an illustrative manner.
